Horseback Trips

Mike and Maddie also own and operate a horse trekking outfit (Real Kiwi Horse Trekking). Below are some of their most popular multi-day packages!

Experience New Zealand’s pristine backcountry on horseback. A unique high-country ride through some of the most scenic destinations in the South Island. Take a ride on horseback through some of New Zealand’s most pristine wilderness and natural landscapes nestled in amongst the Four Peaks Range. Experience breathtaking views of the mountains, glacial fed rivers and the Canterbury plains on one of our bespoke trekking adventures.

We specialise in accommodating small groups of 2 – 10 riders. Our willingness to retain small groups allows a personal and enjoyable experience for all. Safety is important to us, so we have carefully selected all of our horses and ponies to ensure we have a suitable mount for all ages and riding abilities. Everyone is fitted with a helmet and given a riding briefing prior to their trek. All our guides are experienced in horsemanship and trained in first aid.

We offer everything from backcountry day trips, multi-day treks and hunting from horseback. There is no better way to experience the mountains than from the saddle – a genuine mountain escape with breathtaking views and comfortable stays.

Riding Level

(B) BEGINNER A beginner rider is someone who has never ridden before or ridden a few times in a controlled environment. If you have experience but haven’t ridden in several months or years, it is best to ride as a beginner and be paired with a quiet natured horse.
(I) INTERMEDIATE An intermediate rider is someone who can rise to the trot and sit to a canter comfortably. We also expect that you can control your horse within and independently of the group. An intermediate rider will enjoy a more responsive horse.
(E) EXPERIENCED An experienced rider is someone who has ridden for several years and is confident on any horses with any temperament. An experienced rider will enjoy a forward moving and responsive horse.

SAFETY: The safety of our riders, guides and horses is paramount. While every effort is made to accommodate all riders when pairing rider and horse, we must consider our horses temperaments.

It is important to remember that a horse has a mind of its own and so, an accurate understanding of rider experience and ability is imperative in ensuring everyone has an enjoyable ride. We have carefully selected all of our horses and ponies to suit all experience levels and abilities. Please consider the guide above before selecting your riding level!
