EXCLUSIVE ACCESS TO THE BEST TAHR HUNTING IN NEW ZEALAND

THE MOUTAIN MONARCH

Bull tahr is the pinnacle of alpine hunting in New Zealand and one of the most sought after alpine trophies in the world. Our reputation was built on tahr hunting and we’re renowned for producing record book bulls.

Tahr were introduced to New Zealand for sporting purposes in 1904. Populations increased rapidly throughout the South Island due to no natural predators and have since flourished in our alpine environments. New Zealand is home to the only free-range population of tahr outside of their native range in the central Himalayan ranges of Northern India and Nepal.

Bull tahr in their winter cape is arguably one of the most beautiful animals in the world. Their lion like mane and the terrain they inhabit truly makes them one of New Zealand’s most remarkable and rewarding trophies.

WHAT TO EXPECT

HUNTING TAHR IN NEW ZEALAND

Tahr hunting is similar to almost all other goat or sheep hunting. Expect a lot of glassing and steep terrain. Our private hunting area encompasses 25,000 acres of premier free-range tahr hunting with the advantage of well tracked 4WD/ATV access. Hunts are conducted daily from our luxury lodge, spike camp or backcountry cabin for private land hunts and from a canvas wall tent, spike camp or backcountry cabin for wilderness expeditions.

We primarily operate on private land, as it holds exceptional numbers of trophy class free-range bull tahr. It is not uncommon to glass over 30 – 40 bulls for a single day. Although bull tahr can be hunted year-round, they display an impressive blonde and dark brown cape throughout the winter months and their mane is particularly striking during the rutting period.

Rutting period: May – July
