HUNTING SEASONS

Hunting Seasons & Climate

In contrast to North America, New Zealand does not have government imposed hunting seasons for big game. Although hunting is available year-round, our season is based around rutting periods and operates from mid-February through to early August.

As a general guide, antlered species are in hard antler from early-February through to mid-September. The below chart is indicative of rutting periods and recommended months to hunt each species.

The waterfowl and upland game bird hunting season is open from May through to August each year. Certain species such as Canada geese and Merriam turkeys can be hunted year-round.

No New Zealand big game require tags or licenses. Certain game bird species require a license to hunt in New Zealand. Please refer to our waterfowl and upland game bird species page for licensing requirements.

CLIMATE

New Zealand seasons are opposite to the USA/Northern Hemisphere.

New Zealand is a small mountainous country, and our climate is heavily influenced by two main geographical features: the mountains and the sea. As a result, weather conditions can fluctuate significantly at any time of the year. It is important to have the right clothing and equipment for the climate and terrain. Weather can change suddenly, especially in high elevations. Please refer to our hunting gear guide for recommended clothing and equipment.
