Firearms & Licensing

Any calibre from .270 and up is suitable for all big game species in New Zealand.

Bringing a rifle and ammunition to New Zealand is easy with some early planning. Alternatively, you can hire one of ours for $230 for entire trip duration. We have a range of calibres available for hire. The preferred rifle calibres are our 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag or Kimber lightweight 30-06. You will have the opportunity to take target shots and familiarise yourself with the rifle prior to your hunt.

Shot distances vary on targeted game species and hunters capabilities. Rifle distances typically range from 100 yards to 350 yards. Some shots can range out to 400 + yards depending on the hunter. We strongly recommend practicing shooting out to these distances in diverse terrain and weather conditions to build confidence for in the field.

The online application is to be completed at least one month in advance of travel – please allow plenty of time for the application to be processed. Hunters are required to declare all firearms to New Zealand Customs on arrival and an approved visitor firearms licence will be issued to you. You will need to have $25 NZD cash to pay for the temporary visitor firearms licence.

Please contact your airline or view their website to confirm firearms travel regulations. Each airline will have specific requirements.
